Excellent summary of the “lily-white” movement that took control of the Texas Republican party and spread through the South beginning during Harrison’s time in office. When the Democrats routed the Republicans in 1892, the party realigned in favor of the lily-whites. Their hold in the South contributed to black voters leaving the party of Lincoln throughout the 20th century.
