Leach explained in the letter that he urged Louis B. Michener, the head of Harrison’s campaign, to select Pennsylvania Senator Matthew Quay as RNC Chair. Quay worked tirelessly for Harrison’s election, especially in New York. To counter Quay, Harrison’s friend John C. New (a fellow Hoosier) became head of the Executive Committee. Quay later did attempt to extract places for Pennsylvania men in the spoils system, but Harrison resisted.
A. T. Volwiler tried and failed to write a biography of Harrison for several decades. In the end, he produced an impressive collection of research and a book of letters between Blaine and Harrison.
