Robert Smalls, from Escaped Slave to House of Representatives | African American History Blog | The African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross:

After Smalls lost his Congressional seat in the Southern Democratic coup, President Benjamin Harrison nominated him as Collector for his home port in Beaufort, in 1890. President Cleveland removed him, but William McKinley reappointed him, and he served until Woodrow Wilson dismissed him in 1913.
