After the Harrison children were grown, it was not uncommon for Carrie to take vacations while her husband worked on political matters, often with her daughter Mamie and the grandchildren. Deer Park, MD, was a popular mountaintop resort town for Washington elites. The First Lady was apparently waiting for her husband to join her once he could get away. Congress was not in session, but the expansion of the Navy was underway, and the Pan-American exhibition was set to open in three weeks.
Dr. Frisby Newcomer passed away on September 13th, 1889. Not only was Dr. Newcomer a family friend who had delivered the Harrison’s second child, Mamie, but he was also (by marriage) President Harrison’s maternal uncle.
Sarah Irwin, the President’s aunt, was by his side on his deathbed, twelve years later.
