Stephen B. Elkins’ Valentine’s Letter to Harrison 11

Sherman wants and expects the Blaine strength largely, but Blaine’s friends have in mind that Sherman could have nominated him in 1876 and 1880 but would not do it. He has no real claim on Blaine’s friends. This word has been passed around. You have more strength here in influential quarters than you think. You know I have thought for two years you were the strongest leader we had next to Blaine, and that your chances for nomination were the best next to Blaine’s. I think so now.

Stephen B. Elkins to Benjamin Harrison, February 14th, 1888.

Elkins had been James G. Blaine’s chief booster since 1876, and was responsible for securing the 1884 nomination for his friend. Elkins must have recalled Harrison’s friendship and support during that 1884 campaign, including Harrison’s willingness to defend Blaine’s name against libel.

Sherman would end up deadlocked against a crowded field at the convention, and the Blaine forces rallied to push Harrison toward the nomination on the eighth ballot.
