I’ve seen this making the rounds today, and I’m not quite sure why people are surprised. The 2006 “elections” in Palestine were a disaster, having been essentially forced upon the Palestinian population by the US in the first place. We were forced to choose between the corrupt, US-backed Fatah party, or the militant Hamas party.
The election itself essentially boiled down to the corrupt vs the “other” who had never actually held leadership in Palestine…and the “other” [Hamas] ended up winning the popular vote, due in part to Palestinians wanting to go with new leadership, as well as many people being fed up with the corrupt and ineffective, US-backed Fatah, leading them to vote for Hamas out of a hatred towards Fatah [sound familiar?]
The US spent several millions on these “elections”, which were intended to bolster the strength and image of Fatah leading up to the elections themselves…only to be shocked when Hamas won.
Talks for a unity government began between Fatah and Hamas, with the hopes being that they’d lead Palestine together as a single party, but of course, this couldn’t stand with the US.
The US then started funneling money into Fatah, the losers of the election, and provided them with military training and support. They then deliberately fomented a bloody “civil war”, instructing Fatah to seize control from the democratically elected Hamas in these US sponsored elections.
This resulted in around 1000 dead, and effectively split the Palestinian government, and people, in two, ending with Hamas in control of the Gaza Strip, and Fatah in control of the West Bank.
So when you hear about anything regarding the Fatah/Hamas split, or the incredibly corrupt political situation in Palestine, or the increasingly authoritarian Mahmoud Abbas, always keep in mind that this is the result of the US attempting to control and dominate the Palestinian political situation, much of which was done with the help of Hillary Clinton [among numerous others].
Although unrelated, we should also take care to remember the role of the US in other foreign coups, such as the coup in Iran that essentially led to the situation we see there today, as well as the state of the relationship between Iran and the US.
You also have the fact that the US is directly responsible for the birth of the Taliban in Afghanistan, which itself led to the birth of al-Qaida and subsequently ISIS [although ISIS was also the result of US actions in Iraq].
The US has a long and bloody history of interfering with foreign elections, governments, and societies, drastically altering their natural development and destabilizing entire regions, bloodbaths, and global instability.
It’s for reasons like these that I will never support the neoliberal warhawk that is Hillary Clinton [or the parading madman that is Donald Trump, for that matter], and also why I couldn’t care less about these fears of ~~~foreign elements~~~ interfering with US elections.
Maybe it’s about time the US got a taste of its own medicine for once, frankly.
