Photographs: American History Bill Tilghman 1854-1924, lawman. As a federal marshal in the Indian Territory, he was one of the fabled "Three Musketeers." In 1924, Tilghman, at the age of 70, was appointed marshal of Cromwell, Oklahoma, an oil boomtown. On 1 November 1924 Bill Tilghman was killed while trying to arrest Wiley Lynn, a corrupt prohibition officer.
